Start Your Own Business-Is It Time To Consider A New Direction
By Dave Bedard

Ever feel that way? Like.. “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take it anymore.”

What to do? “I’m stuck in this rut…in this job I don’t even like anymore.”

Or is it “Here I am stuck with NO job, and I don’t know where or when the next one is going to come from.”

Or maybe its, “Hey, I’ve been HERE before..How many more times do I have to put up with this? Isn’t there a nice, secure job out there for a person like me?”

Uncertainty can eat your lunch…sap your energy…really take the fun out of life.

If having an income is not an option, but a necessity, there are only two or three ways we can go: 1. Rob a Bank, 2. Seek a new position, 3. Start your own business.

Let’s explore all three options:

  1. “The Bank Job”

Pros: Big Payoff, Free lunch, plenty of spare time.

Cons: High Risk, hanging out with the wrong crowd, no privacy,

lousy food, limited wardrobe, looks bad on resume’

  1. Seek a New position:

Pros: Paycheck, benefits, hang out with better crowd (hopefully), get to keep my present home, better food, might improve resume’

Cons: Controlled by clock, still uncertain about security, The Commute,

Limited income potential, Retirement…When? How good?

3. Start Your Own Business:

Pros: Be my own boss, work from home, unlimited income potential, closer to food, no need for future resumes', Call your own shots, unlimited opportunity for promotions, Retire where and when you want. Excellent Tax Benefits, “2 Minute Commute”

Cons: No guaranteed paycheck, risk.

More and more people are choosing option three. Robert Kiyoaski, Author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, says "it’s the difference between working for wages and working for profits." He continues: “Wages may get you by, but profits make you a fortune.”

"If you want to achieve excellence, you can get there today. As of this second, quit doing less-than-excellent work." -- Thomas J. Watson, Founder & Chairman, IBM

Let’s face it, there’s no loyalty from the corporations to the employees anymore. The days of the “cradle to the grave” job is a thing of the past. The employment landscape has changed forever, Companies everywhere are downsizing, going virtual and going offshore, taking many jobs with them.

In public and private industry, in every sector of the workforce, employers are eliminating a host of employee benefits, closing pension plans, Healthcare benefits are dwindling, employer-sponsored educational assistance is dwindling. All in all having a “Good job” just ain’t what it used to be.

A generation ago, it was believed that the safest path to success was to go to school , get a good job and work hard. That was where security could be had, and owning your own business was risky. Now, with all the aforementioned moves of companies going virtual, downsizing, benefit cutting and going offshore, risk today is in the job…and True financial security is in building a successful business of your own.

If you feel you are not capable or willing to do this excellent work in the job or field you are presently in, then you may decide to “Take This Job and…” trade it in for a new career… New job ..or Start your own buisiness. Whatever you decide. Give it time, decide to make it..and give it your all…Personal Excellence..It’s a decision.

The Christmas classic, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, features poor Hermey, a discontented elf who spends his days making toys in Santa’s North Pole workshop. While all of his elfish co-workers love their jobs making toys for girls and boys, Hermey harbors a secret wish to become a dentist.

He reads books on dentistry when he should be inspecting toys, and he tinkers with the teeth of dolls when he should be painting cars and wagons.

Ultimately, Hermey’s desire to become a dentist comes to light when his daydreaming disrupts the toy-making assembly line.

When questioned about his lack of production, Hermey discloses his repulsion to making toys and his dream of becoming a dentist. Hermey is mocked and ridiculed. An elf that doesn’t enjoy toy-making? Unthinkable! Ostracized by his fellow elves and derided by his foreman, Hermey quits his job.

Maybe you can relate to Hermey. Perhaps you’re tired of chasing a paycheck while doing work you find unfulfilling while your dreams languish. Hey, maybe it is time to start your own business.

Let’s face it, there is no loyalty from the corporation to their employees anymore. The employment landscape has changed forever. Companies everywhere are downsizing, going virtual and going offshore and taking the jobs with them.

In public and private industry, in every sector of the workforce, employers are eliminating a host of employee benefits, or reneging on their promises to provide certain perks that were previously touted to attract workers.

Pension programs are closing. Retirement sweeteners, such as 401(k) plans with matching employer contributions, are being scaled back. Health care benefits are dwindling. Employer-sponsored educational assistance is on the decline. Workers are required to pay ever-increasing premiums for their medical benefits, disability coverage, and life insurance.

Much of this was predicted by Harry Dent, Author and Economist. In his book, The Roaring 2000’s, Dent states “In the New Networking economy, there won’t be jobs, only businesses. We are all becoming entrepreneurs. We’ll all own our own businesses, make our own decisions and that means you can work from home if you wish.”

Today, the Internet makes it easier than ever before to be in control of your own time and your own destiny. You can star and run your own business without major start-up costs, limited knowledge, if you are willing to learn. You can minimize your overhead , plus gain many of the same tax advantages afforded large corporations.

Senator Olympia Snowe, chair of the Small Business Commission stated that “Americans need more options to provide for their families, and the ability to work from home allows them to accomplish their objective.”

SBA FACTS: 1 out of 8 Households in the U.S. operate a Home Based business. Small business accounts for ½ of the country’s output and ½ of the private sector workforce. And 50% of these are home based businesses.

Perhaps this is a safeer option. Start a home based business part time and give it time to grow with little risk and tremendous possibilities.

If you’re determined to find work you can put your heart into, then your hours will be full of meaning, and you will feel energetic and alive. If you settle for doing work you don't much care about, your hours will likely lack meaning, and you will harbor the sensation that life is missing something.

Thoreau "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation..." Most men don't honestly contemplate what makes life worth living, makes it bearable, makes it joyful even, so they "...go to the grave with the song still in them".

The best years of the rest of your life will be spent working. There's a right way, and a wrong way to do it. With a groan, or with a song. Your decisions today will affect your outlook tomorrow.

In The Millionaire Next Door, the authors' surveys of wealthy people found that the typical millionaire achieved status by systematically under spending and over saving from modestly above average income.

The law of compounding interest and investment returns built wealth over time, not overnight successes or excessive risk-taking. A high percentage were self employed…successful small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Every day, 25,000 people in America become millionaires," "For many millionaires, the pathway to wealth is by owning their own businesses, not working for someone else." 70% of all millionaires in the U.S. are entrepreneurs.

The benefits of those who have made the switch are numerous.. be your own boss, no commute, you decide how much you want to work AND how much you want to make… you design your own prosperity. A huge lifestyle benefit is gained from this option. With the power of the Internet, you can conduct business in New York, London, Hong Kong and Beijing and STILL make the soccer game.

Consider this: Surveys of happiness in the U.S. have shown that wealth affects the sense of well-being by only 2%. Happiness is about relationships, friends, family, and community ….a balanced life.

It’s all about living learning, experiencing and growing as a human being. In the end, It’s what we do with our lives that counts. Wealth can be a critical tool for achieving the freedom to maximize our experience and out impact on others.

Money…economic wealth is ultimately about giving yourself the freedom to choose the lifestyle that you want and to champion the causes you believe in! Life is too short to rent yourself out forever.

Albert Einstein said "Insanity is repeating the same actions, over and over, again and again, and expecting different results."

So,If you want your life to change, your career to grow, and if you want your family to prosper, then the real question becomes: What are you going to do different, today?

There has never been a better time to consider a business of your own. From franchising to Direct Selling to Online businesses, you have unlimited opportunities to make the transition from working for a paycheck to creating wealth.

Create a lifestyle of your dreams. It’s time to take control of your own economic destiny. It’s a decision that I made over 20 years ago and I’ve never looked back. You can, too. It does take guts to get out of the rut. But, it’s worth it.

Remember, You're the architect of your future. If you want a better life, you must design a better plan.
